Novi
Suvorov vs. Moreau, 15 august, 1799
By June, 1799, Suvorov and his Austrian allies had evicted the French from almost all of Italy. The French army moved north across the mountain to assemble from Genoa on high ground at Novi Ligure on 14 August. The next morning Paul Kray's Austrian corps assaulted the French left and the battle was on.
Suvorov committed a Russian corps to attack the center, and Melas' Austrian corps attacked the French right flank. Cavalry proved ineffective in broken terrain and was hardly used by either side. Kray's troops suffered heavy losses but by evening the French army was badly beaten and the French hold on the Italian Riviera was endangered. However, the Coalition planners proceeded to throw away their advantage by sending Suvorov's Russians to Switzerland.
Montebello
Prelude to Marengo, 9 June 1800
The 6th Light Infantry Demi-brigade of Watrin’s Division encountered the enemy. Watrin aggressively fed his units into the battle, but found himself opposed by superior forces. The Austrian Ott disposed of 26 infantry battalions and 15 cavalry squadrons. French soldiers twice seized Casteggio, but were driven out. Attempts to flank the Austrian left were repulsed. As Lannes' command neared their breaking point, General Chambarlhac’s division arrived. The 43rd Line attacked the enemy right, the 24th Light assaulted their left and the 96th Line charged the center. Despite intense Austrian artillery fire, the combined pressure forced back Ott's tired soldiers and brought about a phased withdrawal. O'Reilly's survivors and the numerous Austrian cavalry covered the retreat..
Marengo
Desaix Intervenes in Time, 14 June 1800
At the siege of Genoa, the Austrian Melas ignored French movements to the north. After Napoleon advanced to Milan, he could wait for Melas to try to fight his way out. On June 8, however, Massena surrendered Genoa. Napoleon cast his divisions in a wide net, and moved one division to Marengo, close to the Austrians at Alessandria, baiting them to attack.
Suddenly, on the morning of June 14, they took the bait. But Napoleon’s divisions were scattered too widely to support him and he was outnumbered two to one. Napoleon's lines grew weaker, and at three in the afternoon the Austrians finally broke through. With the French scattering and the Austrians pursuing them, French divisions began arriving from all directions. The Austrians, meanwhile, had let their ranks fall into disorder, and, finding themselves facing a reinforced enemy they halted and then gave ground to a rapid French counterattack. By 9:00 P.M. the French routed them.
Hohenlinden
The Coalition is Finished, 3 December 1800
General Moreau's 56,000-strong army engaged some 64,000 Austrians and Bavarians who believed they had beaten the enemy, pursuing through heavily wooded terrain. Moreau ambushed the Austrians as they emerged from the forest while launching Antoine Richepanse's division in a surprise envelopment of the Austrian left. The allies were forced into a disastrous retreat that compelled them to request an armistice, effectively ending the War of the Second Coalition.
